International Women's Film Festival

What's a fun event without some grainy iPhone photos?

Last night a friend and I attended the opening night of the 24th annual St. John's International Women's Film Festival (IWFF). The event took place at the St. John's Arts and Culture Centre. The red carpet was rolled out and there were many well known Canadian on screen favourites in attendance. There was an opening reception before heading into the auditorium for speeches, followed by the showing of "The Grand Seduction".

The Grand Seduction is a comedy starring Brendan Gleeson, Taylor Kitsch, Liane Balaban and NL favourite Gordon Pinsent. This version was an English-language remake of the Québec film "La grande séduction". The English version was shot in Newfoundland's stunningly beautiful Trinity Bight. I would argue both versions showcase quintessential Newfoundland and Québec senses of humour: sarcastically smart and slightly saucy.

Following the screening, The Dardanelles performed outside the auditorium. This was my first time attending a IWFF event and I hope to see more of the films being screened at this year's festival. It runs from October 22-26. For more information, have a look at their website.
